It is just like the one his grandmother had, and make American style (small holes, not deep like Belgian) square waffles. Ours never come out square because its difficult to pour the batter just right for that.I have never experienced difficulty with the irons staying in place. There are clips that secure them. Reading the instructions should make that quite clear. I do find it inconvenient to clean the baked-on oils from the waffle side of the irons, but they did design it so they remove for cleaning, so I can't complain. The maker has a heat dial, with a setting for waffles. It adjusts easily to make your waffles more/less brown. The light comes on while baking, and shuts off when finished. I don't find the design at all cheap. As I said, his grandmother had one. My husband experienced her waffles on this same iron through his whole childhood. I expect ours will...
